Nicolas Procos Appointed as Alameda Municipal Power General Manager

Alameda City Manager Jill Keimach announced yesterday the appointment of Nicolas Procos as general manager of City-owned Alameda Municipal Power (AMP), replacing former General Manager Glenn Steiger, who retired from the utility in August.

Alameda Municipal Power has been providing public power to Alameda for 129 years and is the oldest municipal electric utility in California, and among the oldest in the country. Decades before climate change became a household word, AMP was a leader in the promotion of clean, sustainable, and renewable power.

AMP’s general manager operates as the CEO of this innovative electric utility with approximately 100 employees, establishing the strategic direction of the organization. Working with the Alameda community, the general manager will implement progressive initiatives to make AMP an efficient state-of-the-art utility, including advanced metering infrastructure, infrastructure investments and upgrades across the service territory, and community solar.

Recently as Manager of Utilities Administration for the Port of Oakland, Procos was responsible for all utility functions, including power procurement, renewable strategy, rate making, regulatory compliance, legislative advocacy, energy efficiency, distributed generation, and strategic planning. Prior to that, Procos worked for the City of Palo Alto Utilities Department, Alameda Municipal Power, and the California Public Utilities Commission. Procos has over 17 years’ experience with electric, gas, water, wastewater, and fiber optic utilities.

“We are delighted that Nico has accepted the challenge to lead Alameda Municipal Power,” said Alameda City Manager Jill Keimach. “We conducted an extensive national search and ended up finding an experienced power utility professional with an impressive career right here in the East Bay. I am confident that Nico’s proven track record of management and leadership at the Port of Oakland and in the utility industry will help power AMP to become a modern utility for the future. The AMP staff are excited about Nico returning to the organization and his commitment to long-term management and consistency, as am I.”

Procos will take leadership of AMP on February 22, 2017. The general manager is hired by the city manager and reports to both the city manager and the Public Utilities Board (PUB). Assistant City Manager Liz Warmerdam has been serving as the interim general manager at AMP since September, 2016.

“I am honored to be back in Alameda and have the opportunity to manage such a well-run electric utility. It's not often one gets an opportunity to lead such a storied organization and I am deeply humbled to have been selected to lead the utility and continue to provide excellent service to the residents of Alameda,” said Procos. “I look forward to implementing AMP’s goals to improve ways of doing business to manage costs, improve our service, and provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy to the Alameda community.”

Procos holds a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
