In Alameda, in addition to electing a Mayor and City Councilmembers, voters also elect a City Auditor and Treasurer. The Auditor is responsible for at least an annual audit of the City's financial operations, books and records to assure that the City's financial transactions, accounts and records are maintained in accordance with the requirements of the City Charter, state and federal laws and generally accepted accounting principles.
The Treasurer recommends to Council an investment policy for City monies and monitors and reports results of the City investment portfolio.

Kevin Kearney has three decades of local government experience in the City of Alameda, and currently serves as the City Auditor. During his time as Auditor, the City has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Association for 24 consecutive years. Kevin has previously served as co-chairman of the Financial Sustainability Committee, and was a member of the Pension Task Force. Born and raised in Alameda, Kevin was educated in Alameda’s public schools. He received his undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley, and postgraduate degree from San Francisco State University. He grew up participating in Alameda Recreation and Parks department youth sports, played college-level baseball and football, and was signed by the Oakland Athletics prior to earning his postgraduate degree. Kevin is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), with his accounting firm located in Alameda. He is an avid supporter of local youth sports and recreation programs, and resides on island with his family.

Kevin was first elected City Treasurer in 2000, then re-elected in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. During his terms the City has won numerous awards and received state and national recognition for budgeting, financial reporting, and investment policies. In addition to consulting with staff and other elected officials on a wide variety of financial issues, Kevin served as co-chair of the Fiscal Sustainability Committee and served on the Pension Task Force. Kevin is a Certified Financial Planner™ and the founder and president of Kevin Kennedy, LLC, an investment advisory firm located in Alameda. Kevin also serves on the Board of Directors of Bank of Marin.
