Food For Fines : June 8 - July 8

Alameda Free Library’s Food for Fines Program

Found a library book under your bed? Forget to bring a DVD back on time? Now is your chance to clear your fines and help others at the same time by donating food to those in need as part of the Alameda Free Library’s “Food for Fines” program.

As part of the Library’s “Reading is So Delicious” summer reading theme, the Alameda Free Library is offering this fine amnesty period from Saturday, June 8 through Monday, July 8, 2013. During this time period, anyone with an Alameda Free Library card will be given the opportunity to have their overdue materials fines waved in exchange for nonperishable boxed or canned food which will be collected and given to the Alameda Food Bank.

Food items must be brought to the check-out desk of any of the three Alameda libraries during open hours. There is no minimum donation requirement or limit to the amount of overdue fines that can be waived. However, food donations may not be made in exchange for collection fees or lost materials. A list of accepted food items can be found at the three library locations and at http://alamedaca.gov/library/food-fines-june-8-july-8-2013-0 .

The Alameda Free Library hasn’t offered a fine amnesty program since 1984. Library Director Jane Chisaki says she is proud and excited to offer this win/win opportunity. “I hope the Alameda community takes advantage of this rare opportunity. Library patrons will be able to enjoy using their library cards free of fines and the Food Bank will have a fresh, well stocked supply of food to offer those in need.” Everyone in the community whether they owe fines or not, are encouraged to donate food at the library.

This past year the Alameda Food Bank served over 5,600 individuals. This record number of clients has resulted in the depletion of the food bank’s inventories and food is needed that will ensure healthy, balanced meals. By collecting at least two thousand pounds of canned and non-perishable foods in return for waived fines, the Alameda Free Library community will be helping to feed at least eighty Alameda families.

Food for Fines is collaboration between the Alameda Free Library and the Alameda Food Bank. This community food drive presents a great opportunity for residents to give back to the community and take advantage of the great materials and programs the Library offers, such as computer classes, homework tutoring, music, movies, and storytimes.
