On August 3, 2013, APD and SLPD combined efforts and organized their first K9 Competition. The event was a two day event with a closed narcotics competition held in San Leandro on Friday, Aug 2. An open obediance/obstacle competition was held in Alameda Point on Saturday, Aug 3. The Alameda venue was open to the public with food vendors, static Police Tactical Vehicle displays, and equipment vendors. The event drew approximately 31 K9 teams to the San Leandro venue and 36 K9 teams to the Alameda venue from as far as Clear Lake, Fresno, Bakersfied, and the US military; in addition to the many local agencies. It was a great event and fantastic to see all the working dogs and handlers excel during the various competitions.
Much of the event's success is attributed to both APD Sgt Darin Tsujimoto and SLPD Sgt Joey Delgado and their respective K9 officers who facilitated the events for both days. We look forward to hosting a similar event next year, and again, with most of the proceeds going to the K9 Officer Kevin Tonn Foundation who was killed in the line of duty in the City of Galt on January 15, 2013. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event successful and to each competitor for attending!
