Mark your calendars now to be at the Alameda Free Library on July 29th at 6pm. As part of the Summer Reading for Adults, the library will be hosting two members of the Wolf OR-7 Expedition to speak about their project.
In September of 2011, Wolf OR-7 (named because he was the 7th radio-collared wolf in Oregon) dispersed from his pack in northeastern Oregon and made his way southwest all the way into California, becoming the first documented wild wolf in California since 1924.
OR-7’s movement through both Oregon and California has sparked significant conversations about wolf/human co-existence in the region and the Wolf OR-7 Expedition was created to raise awareness of local strategies that make on-the-ground strides in this area. Using an estimated GPS track of OR-7, the expedition team will mountain bike and hike across Oregon and Northern California, creating a documentary film, teaching and leading discussions along the way.
The Alameda Free Library is following the progress of the OR-7 Expedition on maps, and residents can follow even closer by going to the Expedition website, www.or7expedition.org .
The Summer Reading for Adults program will be looking at both domestic and wild animals and how we co-exist with them. The library will be running a pet supplies drive from June 14- August 9, in cooperation with the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. Supplies donated will go to either the Shelter itself or be given to needy families by FAAS staff at the Alameda Food Bank. Many more programs are scheduled as well.
