Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, September 21-27, 2014

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. In celebration of Banned Books Week, the Alameda Free Library will host a Community Banned Books Reading Marathon from September 21- 27, 2014 at the Main Library, 1550 Oak St. The entire community is encouraged to participate as readers, or to come and listen to somone else read. Individuals, families and even large groups can be accommodated.

Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restriction in libraries and schools. While books have been, and continue to be, banned part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only because communities stand up for the right to read. This year there will be a focus on banned and challenged comic books and graphic novels. Come see if your favorite has been challenged.

Books will be provided by the library. For more information or to sign up, please contact the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the library,     (Ph: 510-747-7713. Email: alamedafree@gmail.com.)
