Actions to Remove Invasive Shoreline Weed

Actions to Remove Invasive Shoreline Weed

Spartina is an invasive weed that grows along the City of Alameda shoreline. The City of Alameda's Public Works Department and the California State Coastal Conservancy have partnered for the past 11 years to remove Spartina from the shoreline. Control of Spartina helps prevent flooding, reduces its growth at marinas and residential boat docks, and minimizes its competition with other preferred shoreline plants.  Since this partnership began, the shoreline areas covered by Spartina have been reduced by more than 95%.

During the week of August 3, 2015, the Public Works Department and the California State Coastal Conservancy will be using a nontoxic herbicide for the control of Spartina. Public paths will remain open at all times, though the City requests that the public stay out of work areas during the day it is being sprayed.  The work areas will be posted and are within the tidal zone.

The Spartina control work will be at the following shoreline locations:

  • 500-block of Tideway Drive (behind Paden Elementary School)
  • 2400-block of Shore Line Drive
  • Bayview Drive to Towata Park
  • Bay Farm Island Bridge to the High Street Bridge
  • Bay Farm Island Shoreline Park, Veterans Court to Aughinbaugh Way

Later in the autumn, additional follow up work may occur at the locations above.

Notifications of pending work at specific locations will be posted approximately 48-72 hours in advance.  More information can be found on the Invasive Spartina Project website at http://www.spartina.org/.
