City of Alameda and Alameda County Industries Partner in Celebration of "America Recycles Day"

On November 15, 2016, the City of Alameda will be celebrating “America Recycles Day,” our nation’s only recognized day dedicated to increasing Americans’ participation in recycling and the purchase of recycled products. This year's theme for Alameda’s event is “Share Some Comfort and Security”, benefitting Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS), to ensure that animals currently under their care are both comfortable and protected.

This is the City’s 13th consecutive year participating in an America Recycles Day collection event, one of over 2,000 events nationwide. The City’s event begins Monday, November 14, and runs through Thursday, November 17. It focuses on “reuse”, the practice of giving our surplus items a second life by repurposing them for other uses or providing them to others for their use. Alamedans are being asked to donate gently used fleece blankets, collars, and leashes in suitable condition that can be used at the Alameda Animal Shelter. Alternatively, brand new items can be donated as well.

According to Bob Haun, City of Alameda’s Public Works Director, donating gently used pet items during the event is timely. “Pets are frequently recipients of holiday gifts, such as new collars and bedding, which means their old items are potentially headed to the landfill,” said Haun. Public Works is hopeful that focusing our efforts during America Recycles Day on the reuse of pet supplies will save material from the landfill and also benefit pets in need at the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

During 2015, Alameda’s animal shelter accepted over 900 cats and dogs. The supplies needed to properly care for that volume of animals is considerable and would be overwhelming if it were not for the efforts of FAAS and the community's numerous volunteers and donors. The City of Alameda and ACI are proud to support this effort by collecting items that might otherwise end up in our limited landfill space.
