Alameda Free Library to Screen Breaking Silence Documentary

The Alameda Free Library is partnering with HEART Women & Girls, a nonprofit focused on sexual violence awareness and prevention in the Muslim community, to screen Breaking Silence. This documentary is about sexual assault in the Muslim community. Breaking Silence is the first film of its kind in documenting American Muslim women's stories about their sexual assault experiences coping, coming out to their families and friends, and their insight about the change that needs to take place to help survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and prevent reoccurrences. The film interviews with four women who have never before spoken about their assault experience on camera.

WHAT: Screening of the documentary Breaking Silence

WHEN: Sunday, August 6, at 2:00 PM

WHERE: Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, Stafford Room

HEART will follow the screening with a facilitated discussion to help process the stories and issues raised in the documentary. The documentary is 40 minutes. Resources for sexual assault survivors will be provided.

Everyone is welcome at this free event. The documentary and discussion will feature mature content. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Hallie Fields at hfields@alamedaca.gov with any questions.
