Read a Banned Book!
Help celebrate Banned Books Week and our freedom to read by reading out loud from a banned or challenged book! The Alameda Free Library will hold a Banned Book Readathon on Thursday, September 29th from 10am until 6pm at the Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, Alameda. Readers of all ages and abilities are welcome to come read for up to 30 minutes, and groups are welcome to read together. The library will provide a large variety of books to choose from, or you may bring your own if you have a particular favorite. Sign up is easy, just call or come by any of our library locations and Reference Staff will be happy to sign you up.
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community; librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types, in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. If you’re interested in finding out why a particular book was banned or challenged, a book will be available that explains the objections.
You can call the Alameda Free Library at the following numbers: Main Library – (510) 747-7713, West End Branch – (510) 747-7767, Bay Farm Island Branch – (510) 747-7787.
