On October 2, 2018, the Alameda City Council passed a Minimum Wage Ordinance to raise the citywide minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by July 1, 2020.
Currently, the minimum wage in Alameda follows the State's minimum wage requirements, which is $10.50 for businesses with 25 or fewer employees and $11.00 for those with over 25 employees. The statewide minimum wage will gradually reach $15 per hour by 2023. Under State law, on January 1, 2019, the minimum wage for small and large employers in Alameda will increase to $11.00 and $12.00 an hour respectively.
The Alameda Minimum Wage Ordinance increases the minimum wage in two increments in 2019 and 2020, making no distinction between small and large businesses. The first City increase will occur on July 1, 2019, six months after the State-mandated increase on January, 1, 2019. The first increase will raise the minimum wage to $13.50 for all businesses. The second increase will occur on July 1, 2020, and raises the wage to $15.00 per hour. There will not be another increase until July 1, 2022.
Starting on July 1, 2022 (and every July 1 thereafter), all employers in Alameda will be subject to an annual Consumer Price Index adjustment with a ceiling of up to 5% per year.
