Alameda Point Development Kicks Off Fleet Week with
American Armed Forces Cup
September 20, 2016 - Alameda, CA - On October 1, the American Armed Forces Cup Regatta will take place for the first time within Seaplane Lagoon at The Point in Alameda. Active members and reservists from all five branches of the military will compete in a hands-on sailing regatta lead by Club Nautique. Coached by some of their most experienced club racers, the five armed forces will race for the trophy starting at 1pm. Also new for 2016 will be a land-side festival including an afternoon of live music, family friendly activities, food tucks, and local beer and wine hosted by The Point. The event runs from 12:30-5pm. Admission is free and all-ages are welcomed.
Festival entertainment will include live music from Joyride and Lost Dog Found, Veteran Jeopardy provided by Operation Dignity, and the return of the Alameda Point Pumpkin Patch providing kid-friendly activities. The Coast Guard, Army, Air Force, and Alameda Police Department will proudly be on-site with each branch showcasing their display. Select proceeds from land side activities will serve as a fundraiser for Operation Dignity, the Oakland based non-profit committed to helping veterans rediscover hope and dignity by providing the tools needed to live a self-sufficient and stable life. Operation Dignity serves homeless and at-risk veterans, their families, and the communities they live in. The event is also co-sponsored by the City of Alameda’s Community Development Department.
This event is part of a series of community building events in advance of the new development, The Point. The 68-acre mixed-use development spearheaded by Alameda Point Partners is scheduled to break ground early this fall at the former Naval Air Station. The project vision includes mixed residential, artisanal retail, offices, restaurants, parks, and creative spaces to provide a destination for families, seniors, and urban professionals.
The event series will build on the successes of neighboring businesses at Spirits Alley and the Alameda Point Antiques Faire to continue to cultivate a home for local creatives, makers, and art and food enthusiasts. Upcoming attractions include a pop-up container café and event space launching end of year. For more information visit www.alamedapointpartners.com and/or connect with Facebook.com/thepointalameda.
