Annual Street Repair & Resurfacing Project Commences
The City’s annual street repair and resurfacing project will begin in late July and is estimated to be completed by late December. Construction work hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The repair will take place in several phases, and not all on the same day. Curb and gutter will be removed and replaced in a few places, then areas of poor pavement will be patched, then the edges of the street will be ground down, then cracks will be filled, then the street will be paved, then any traffic markings will be replaced. During construction, motorists will experience minor disruptions in traffic, temporary loss of parking spaces, temporary restricted street access, as well as an increase in noise and dust levels. Bus stop access will be maintained throughout the project.
Two types of repair work will be done: asphalt concrete overlay and asphalt concrete repair. Asphalt concrete overlay is a mixture of asphalt cement (tar), gravel, and sand that is spread with a paving machine and compacted with rollers. For street work that requires overlays, the contractor will make best efforts to maintain one lane of traffic available in each direction. However, site conditions may require that only one lane be available for both directions. In this case, flag persons will be used to control traffic and delays will occur. It is possible that on-street parking will be removed for up to one week during construction hours. The City is scheduled to overlay 5 miles of streets (or 16 streets) throughout the city.
The following streets have been identified for asphalt concrete overlay work:
STREET | FROM | TO |
Alameda Avenue | Grand Street | Walnut Street |
Dayton Avenue | Grand Street | Palmera Court |
Fernside Boulevard | Central Avenue | Thompson Avenue |
Grand Street | Clement Avenue | Fortmann Way |

Asphalt concrete repair focuses on specific areas of the street requiring repair. The contractor will make best efforts to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction. However, site conditions may require that only one lane be available for both directions. In this case, flag persons will be used to control traffic and delays will occur. It is possible that on-street parking will be removed for up to one week during construction hours.
The following streets have been identified for asphalt concrete repair:
STREET | FROM | TO | REPAIR TYPE |
Blanding Avenue | Oak Street | Broadway | Center of street – cover RR tracks |
Clinton Avenue | Paru Street | Lafayette Street | 10’ center lane |
Paru Street | Clinton Avenue | South End | 10’ center lane |
Sherman Street | Central Avenue | Santa Clara Avenue | Parking lanes – both sides of street |
The contractor will post ‘No Parking’ signs 72 hours in advance of the planned work to advise residents on dates when the work will begin and when parking restrictions will become effective.
