Each October, Alameda public and private school kindergartners visit Safety Town during Fire Prevention Week. Safety Town is supported by the Alameda Fire Department, Alameda Police Department and volunteers from Bayview Women's Club and Alameda Kiwanis Club. Each year the event takes place at Alameda Point. Miniature buildings are set up in a parking lot with crosswalks and a working stoplight. Firefighters, police offers and volunteers show the kindergartners how to safely cross a street, what to do in a fire or emergency, and the importance of calling 9-1-1 at the appropriate time. The children meet firefighters and police officers and tour through a fire truck and ambulance. The young students also attend a classroom session and video presentation to learn about being safe.
