The City Wants Your Input - Zero Waste Workshop: March 1, 2018

The City of Alameda is inviting the community to provide input on the draft update to Alameda’s 2010 Zero Waste Implementation Plan (ZWIP). This is the second community workshop to solicit input on the draft strategies to be included in the update.

WHAT:
Zero Waste Implementation Plan Update Workshop

WHEN:
Thursday, March 1, 2018; 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak Street

The current draft of the ZWIP Update includes initiatives to divert more materials from landfill, increase targeted commercial and multifamily technical assistance to recycle and compost as much as possible, and looks at ways to enhance and celebrate a Zero Waste culture in Alameda. The final version of the ZWIP Update is scheduled to be presented to City Council this spring.

Alamedans are leaders in recycling and composting when compared to other jurisdictions locally, and the rest of California. This ZWIP update looks to assess where the City is now compared to the goals in the original plan adopted in 2010. The update will also assess what Alameda still needs to do to get as close to “Zero” as possible.

The City of Alameda Public Works Department and Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda (CASA) have been working together to determine the best path forward toward reducing waste not only at the point of discard, but also in designing policies that are meant to reduce the generation of waste, like the recent Straws-On-Request ordinance that became law on January 1 of this year.

For questions about this workshop, please contact Kerry Parker in the Public Works Department at (510) 747-7959.
