Shoreline Cleanup Saturday, November 4
WHERE: Grand Marina, 2099 Grand Street Alameda, CA 94501
WHEN: Saturday, November 4, 2017, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
WHAT: The City of Alameda Public Works Department’s Clean Water Program will be hosting a joint shoreline cleanup with the American Public Works Association (APWA) Northern California Chapter and Summon the Dragon (Dragonboat Team). The event will focus on removing trash/litter from the shoreline, jetty, and water near Grand Marina. Unique opportunities are available to paddle in dragonboats to access areas that are not easily accessible.
To learn more about the event and participate, you can pre-register at http://northernca.apwa.net/EventDetails/12761. Please RSVP by November 1, 2017.
Participants are asked to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and bring their own reusable bucket or bag, work gloves, and reusable water bottle. Portable Floatation Devices (PFD) and paddles will be provided by the dragonboat team for those interested in paddling or riding. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are asked to arrive at 7:30 AM to sign-in and complete waiver forms. Following the cleanup activities, APWA will be hosting lunch as a thank you for event attendees.
WHY: Trash and litter from storm runoff is a major cause of water pollution in the Bay Area. With miles of shoreline, Alameda has a special opportunity to help keep our waterways clean protecting fish, wildlife, and aquatic habitats. Participating in the community cleanup is a great way to help prevent Bay and ocean pollution, meet your neighbors, and show community support. Learn more about pollution prevention and the Clean Water Program at http://www.alamedaca.gov/go-green/green-water.
WHO: City of Alameda Department of Public Works Clean Water Program, American Public Works Association, and Summon the Dragon Dragonboat Team, a two year old dragonboat racing team based in Alameda. Their motto is "Can't catch us!" Summon the Dragon paddle hard twice a week in preparation for planned races in the Philippines, Indonesia, and across the USA, as well as local races. “We see firsthand the effect of trash in our local waters.” Summon the Dragon is proud to partner in this clean-up effort.
