Bag Exchange – Receive a Free Reusable Bag

As part of the City of Alameda’s Hometown Holiday Celebration, the Public Works Department will sponsor a “bag exchange” event on Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m, at the City Hall Parking Lot (2263 Santa Clara Avenue). Bring your pile of single-use plastic bags from home to the Public Works recycling booth and receive a stylish, durable grocery bag free of cost.

This bag exchange is provided to make residents aware of the new County of Alameda requirement banning single-use bags. Beginning January 1, 2013, single-use plastic bags will no longer be available. All stores selling packaged food must charge a minimum of 10 cents for each paper bag.

Many plastic bags end up in the City’s stormwater systems and the Bay resulting in isolated flooding and adversely impact wildlife.  To reduce waste, litter, and the amount of plastic bag pollution in local waterways and the Bay, the City of Alameda is participating in Alameda County Waste Management Authority Board’s ordinance that bans single-use plastic bags from all Alameda County and City stores that sell packaged foods.
