The Alameda County Transportation Commission announced today that the Webster Street SMART Corridor Project in Alameda will begin on February 7, with a completion date in July. The scheduled work includes:
- Coordinate traffic signals, enabling buses and cars to move smoothly and at a safe speed along the street
- Provide buses with capability to extend the green time at signals (signal priority), reducing delays and improving transit reliability
- Provide Alameda Fire Department vehicles with capability to change signals to green (signal preemption), improving emergency response time
- Install a new crosswalk on Central Avenue at the easterly side of Webster Street and Central Avenue intersection
- Install five non-recording cameras to provide the Alameda Police Department with real-time monitoring of traffic conditions and to provide appropriate emergency response, as incidents occur
- Provide enhanced bicycle detection at all intersections
- Install traffic signal at the Webster Street and Pacific Avenue intersection
- Install three traffic advisory signs to alert public to emergencies and accidents in the Posey Tube when they occur and recommend alternate routes
- Install equipment to measure traffic speed and collect traffic data
Construction work hours are Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During construction, motorists may experience minor disruptions in traffic, temporary loss of parking spaces, temporary restricted street access, as well as an increase in noise and dust levels. Bus stop access will be maintained throughout the project.
Alameda Streets that will be included are:
- Webster Street between Central Avenue and the Posey/Webster Tubes
- Constitution/Buena Vista Avenue intersection
- Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway/Third Street intersection
This project is funded with $570,000 from Transportation Fund for Clean Air’s Program Manager fund, $340,000 from Alameda County Transportation Commission’s federal earmark for traffic preemption projects along the I-880 corridor, and $278,000 from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) funding. The City has contributed $350,000 from its Measure B allocation.
