tabber2Overview The City of Alameda is looking to make pedestrian safety improvements at three intersections along the vibrant Park Street business corridor through a collaborative public engagement process. The three intersections are:Park Street at Buena Vista Avenue;Park Street at Pacific Avenue; andPark Street at Lincoln Avenue/Tilden Avenue. Details The first public engagement meeting was held on October 29, 2012. At this meeting, the public expressed interest in looking at a range of options to reduce the distance pedestrians have to cross at the intersections and thereby increase pedestrian safety. The range of improvements for each intersection is discussed below. The final improvements that will be implemented will be based on public input and the environmental analysis. Park Street at Buena Vista Avenue:Option1: This option includes the following components: Reduce the curb radius at the northwest corner of the intersection, thereby reducing the effective street crossing distance for pedestrians. On the north leg of the intersection, stripe a new crosswalk and install a pedestrian signal and ADA compliant accessibility ramps. Install new audible pedestrian push buttons at all four corners of the intersection for the crosswalks. The proposed conduits will have a minimum depth of approximately 24 inches. All pedestrian 1B poles will have a depth of 5 feet and all new traffic signal poles with mast arms will have a depth of approximately 9 feet. Design Option 2: In addition to Option 1 above, install exclusive left turn pockets for all approaches of the intersection and modify the traffic signal to include left turn traffic signal phasing. Design Option 3: In addition to Option 2 above, Access the potential/suitability to relocate the existing northbound Park Street bus stop to the far side of the intersection. Park Street at Pacific Avenue Design Option 1: Install an in-pavement lighted crosswalk on the north leg with a pedestrian countdown sign, flashing beacon, and ADA compliant accessibility ramps similar to the system installed on the south leg of the intersection. Design Option 2: In addition to Option 1 above, the improvements will include bulb-outs at both Park Street crosswalks to reduce the effective the street crossing distance for pedestrians. Design Option 3: In addition to Option 2 above, and if funding is available, add low growing shrubs with irrigation in the bulb-outs to enhance the streetscape. Park Street at Lincoln Avenue/Tilden Way Design Option 1: This option includes the following components: Install bulb-outs at the southwest and southeast corners of the intersection. This would reduce the effective street crossing distance for pedestrian at the crosswalks for the east and south legs of the intersection. Design Option 2: In addition to Design Option 1, Install exclusive left turn pockets for north-south Park Street approaches. Modify the traffic signal to include left turn traffic signal phasing.
