Volunteers Wanted for Coastal Cleanup Day
The Public Works Department, in collaboration with the East Bay Regional Park District, is sponsoring the City of Alameda’s Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at the Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach. This year the volunteers will be meeting at the corner of Park Street and Shore Line Drive. This annual event provides the opportunity for all Alamedans to improve the appearance of our coastline by removing trash, litter, and debris from the City’s shoreline. Volunteers are asked to bring their own reusable bucket or bag and heavy-duty gloves and to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Volunteers under the age of 18, who are accompanied by an adult, are welcome.
To participate, volunteers can pre-register and/or become a beach captain for the event by going to EBParks.org and signing up for the Coastal Cleanup Day (Crown Beach location), or by dialing 888-327-2757 and choosing Option 2. Event registration will also occur the day of the event, starting at 8:30 a.m. Please look for registration staff at the corner of Park Street and Shore Line Drive.
In addition, the following locations will host individual Coastal Cleanup events starting at 9:00 a.m.:
- Ballena Isle Marina and Ballena Bay Yacht Club (1150 Ballena Boulevard, 510-523-5528)
- Oakland Yacht Club (1101 Pacific Marina, 510-522-6868)
- Grand Marina (2099 Grand Street, 510-865-1200)
- Aeolian Yacht Club (980 Fernside Boulevard, 510-523-2586)
If you would like to join one of these smaller clean-up events, please call your preferred marina prior to the day of the event to reserve a spot.
Last year, close to 400 volunteers joined together to clean up Alameda’s shoreline and removed over a ton of debris that otherwise would have harmed the marine ecosystem. This Coastal Cleanup event is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of the fragile marine environment, show community support for shared natural resources, and have fun.
