Former Tesla Engineers Move Business from Atlanta to Alameda

Sila Nanotechnologies, an Atlanta, Georgia-based hi-tech battery R&D company, has selected the City of Alameda for its new 31,000 square foot headquarters after it considered many sites in the Bay Area.  The company plans to be operational at Mariner Square Loop by the end of October with approximately 20 full-time scientists, engineers, and technicians.

“We are happy to have Sila Nanotechnologies join our growing community of high-tech, cutting-edge businesses,” said Mayor Marie Gilmore. “Their employees and families are sure to love Alameda.”

Founded in 2011 by a pair of Silicon Valley engineers from Tesla Motors and a professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the company is backed by Silicon Valley-based venture capital firms Matrix Partners and Sutter Hill ventures, as well as US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation funding.  Sila develops and manufactures patented advanced composite materials that make lithium-ion batteries lighter, smaller, and less expensive.

"We were on a very short move-in time line, and the City of Alameda helped us at every step along the way to expedite the permitting process,” said Gene Berdichevsky, Sila’s CEO.  “That was one of the major factors in helping us decide where to locate."
