What do Alamedans think about single-use straws and
other to-go food ware that is not recyclable or compostable?
On September 19, 2017, the City Council will hold a public hearing to consider whether to require commercial food vendors to only provide straws upon a customer’s request, and clarify that all to-go food ware must be either reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
The City is considering these policy changes because straws and other non-compostable or non-recyclable disposable food ware become litter on our beaches and streets, clog storm drains, and add garbage to our landfills. For more information, see a summary of the City Council’s prior direction here.
