Alameda Police Department Launches We S.E.E Program

Private database of security camera locations to help slow and solve crimes

While overall crime in Alameda is at a historic low, we have seen a recent increase in theft. Today, the Alameda Police Department (APD) is launching We S.E.E., a new program that will help APD quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured evidence, helping slow and solve crimes across the island.

When a crime occurs, APD’s investigation includes checking with nearby residents and businesses to determine if there is camera footage available. Many Alameda businesses are equipped with security cameras, and as technology advances, residents are increasingly adding video doorbells and other surveillance to their homes. These cameras may be capturing vital information that can be used to solve crimes. For example, last year we were able to resolve investigations for package thefts, a peeping tom, and assault with a deadly weapon with evidence obtained from private cameras.

We S.E.E. (Share Electronic Evidence) is a voluntary program, where individuals and businesses can register the location of a camera with APD and help keep the community safe. When a crime occurs, officers will now have access to a list of nearby locations with possible electronic evidence.

We S.E.E. also helps prevent crimes from taking place. Download and display We S.E.E. signs on windows and doors, letting potential criminals know if they are caught on camera, you will share that information with police.

Registered information will only be shared with the Alameda Police Department. The information being registered is the location where a camera may be, not access to your security system. Registered parties will only be contacted by APD if a review of their footage could assist in crime solving.
