Mastick Senior Center – On the Cutting Edge of the Literary Scene

Alameda residents have the unique opportunity to meet with 32 local authors at a book-signing event on March 4th. Members of the Mastick Senior Center recently had a collection of memoirs published, The World Comes to Alameda: Life Stories by Members of Mastick Senior Center in Alameda, California.

This book is a collection of memoirs including childhood recollections, war and travel tales, stories and poems of memorable events, and sketches of life, work and family. Some describe their past lives in foreign lands and different parts of the USA, and their journeys that lead them to Alameda. The book is truly diverse, as are those who authored it. It is a sampler of both life experience and individual expression.

The 190-page book was the idea of Paul Hauser, President of Mastick’s Advisory Board. Paul had written and published several interesting biographies about his life experiences and thought it would be important to have others write about their lives. Mastick Senior Center agreed to pay for the initial publication of the book and a book committee was formed in early 2017 to bring the proposed work to life. An invitation was given to all Mastick seniors encouraging them to write about an experience they would never forget, their childhood in Alameda or elsewhere, a favorite memory, or perhaps about an interesting relative.

Members of the book committee offered help to the 32 writers in composition, proof reading and editing. Many committee members spent hundreds of hours making editing suggestions, proofing and preparing the book for publication. One committee member donated monies to enable the purchase of free books to be given to each author. Outside photography and design leaders were brought in, which was gratefully acknowledged in the book.

All are welcome to attend this one of a kind event. Books will be for sale at the door for $10 each and authors will sign any purchased book. One copy of the book, signed by all 32 authors, will be given away as a door prize to a lucky attendee. Free refreshments will be served.
