Join a Virtual Group Hike on Take-A-Hike Day

Do you love the idea of a group hike but, a) hate the pace of a big group hike, or b) have a schedule that doesn’t allow you to go with a group, or c) just don’t want to go where the group goes? Then we have a hike for you!

The Libraries Outside project invites you to take part in our first ever Virtual Group Hike in November, where the only thing “virtual” is the group. National Take-A-Hike Day is observed annually on November 17. With over 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trail System across the 50 states, there is no lack of opportunity to take a hike.

Sign up on the Library’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/alamedafreelibrary (search events on the left-hand side of the page). Then, between November 14 and November 24, or actually on November 17 if you can, just head out and hike/walk wherever you want, with whomever you want, for as long as you want. Be sure to wear good shoes, take a snack and water, and bring a buddy if you can, but get out there and enjoy the fresh air, scenery, and get a little exercise to boot! Post a photo of yourself on your hike (tagged and dated) on our Facebook event as proof of your participation. This will qualify you as an official “Finisher”.

Every Finisher will receive a Finisher’s Medal. You may pick up your medal at the Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, between November 24 and November 30. No medals will be mailed. Even if you don’t want a medal (but who doesn’t?), you can still post a photo of your hike on the event page. We’re excited to see where everyone goes!

To help you plan your hike, the Library will host an informational evening on Tuesday, November 13, from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Main Library, 1550 Oak St. You can look at trail resources, check out a back pack or camera, and even figure out bus/transit routes to get you to trails. Everyone is welcome.
