INDIVIDUAL TUTORING

If you are a patient person who likes to meet new people and help them, you would be a great Alameda Reads tutor. Volunteer Tutors attend a twelve-hour tutor training and make a six-month commitment to work with a learner.  Tutor training is held about three times a year in the winter, spring, and fall.

 

Description

  • work with one learner every week
  • create a non-pressured, non-academic learning environment
  • learners have a wide range of needs and skills
  • learners range in age from 18 to their 80s
  • tutoring materials and support provided

Tutors Should:

  • Meet with a learner 2 times a week for 1-hour sessions for at least 6 months.
  • Help the learner identify and work towards achieving specific goals.
  • Plan individual lessons based on the learner’s goals and abilities.
  • Report monthly hours and learner progress to the Alameda Reads Office.
  • Be patient, flexible, and have a good sense of humor.
  • Be responsible and reliable.
  • Have good communication, listening and organizational skills.
  • Treat learners with respect and maintain a team approach to learning.

ALAMEDA ADULT SCHOOL

Description

  • volunteer in a classroom with a teacher at the Alameda Adult School
  • work with different students each week
  • students are working toward their high school diploma or GED
  • classes include English reading and writing, math, social studies, science

Tutors Should:

  • Assist during part of a class 1-2 times a week for at least one Adult School
  • Be patient, flexible, and have a good sense of humor.
  • Be ready to try new tasks when Adult School teacher asks.
  • Be responsible and reliable.
  • Have good communication, listening and organizational skills.
  • Treat learners with respect and maintain a team approach to learning.
