Alameda Free Library & Alameda Recreation and Parks Department Team Up to Bring Little Libraries to Our Parks

Alameda Free Library (AFL) and Alameda Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) will be holding a ribbon cutting for the first Little Library to be installed on park property on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in front of the ARPD office, located at 2226 Santa Clara Avenue.

Already popular in Alameda, Little Libraries, small wooden boxes on posts that look a bit like large birdhouses, can be found across the island. Residents take a book or leave a book, keeping the small collections fresh and free for the taking. Thanks to the collaboration of two City departments, Little Libraries will be now available in all Alameda neighborhoods.

The new Little Library at the ARPD office is the first of many, with more to be installed in parks across Alameda. Built by volunteers and donated by HandsOn Bay Area, the Little Libraries will be stocked by the Library using books donated by publishers and maintained by Parks staff. Each starter collection will include materials for kids, teens, and adults. Together, AFL and ARPD hope the Little Libraries will become destination spots within the parks.

The ribbon cutting will be held rain or shine. The Main Library and the ARPD office are both served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A. For more information on this and other Library and Park programs, visit www.alamedaca.gov/events/calendar.
