Starting January 20, 2013, the Alameda Free Library in collaboration with the Islamic Center of Alameda and the Alameda Multicultural Community Center will host a four-part cultural event called “Muslim Journeys: An exploration and celebration of the intertwined histories of Islam and the West.”
The series opens with a viewing of the film Koran by Heart followed by a discussion on January 20, 2013 from 2- 4 p.m. at the Main Library (1550 Oak Street).
The second event, on Sunday February 17, 2013 from 4-7 p.m., is a discussion of two books on the theme of Connected Histories accompanied by a multicultural potluck hosted by the Islamic Center of Alameda at 901 Santa Clara Avenue.
In concert with Women’s History Month the third program, on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 2-4 p.m., will be held at the Leydecker Park Recreation Center (3225 Mecartney Road). The program will showcase stories about women in Islam with a discussion on the Points of View theme.
The final program in the series will be on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 5-9 p.m. at the Alameda Multicultural Community Center (1900 3rd Street; Woodstock Education Center Multipurpose Room). Participants will view and discuss the film Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World.
All events are free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring children who are able to join in the discussions.
