School Crossing Guards are a vital function of the Alameda Police Department (APD). Crossing Guards have the responsibility of safeguarding children at designated intersections prior to and at the end of the school day. The primary responsibility of the Crossing Guard is to use safe gaps in traffic, or when necessary, to create safe gaps to help the children cross the streets safely. The School Crossing Guards will not direct traffic. School Crossing Guards receive training specific to their duties and after training, the Crossing Guard is assigned to a post. Crossing Guard services are contracted out to "All City Management Services, Inc." with APD's Traffic Unit having oversight for the program.
